This handbuilt ceramic botanical sculpture started the way most of my favorite pieces do, with soft stoneware clay and no plan other than following where the form wanted to go. Each petal was shaped by hand, layered and coaxed into an organic vine-like arrangement that feels more grown than made. The result is something that lives somewhere between a garden and a gallery.
 
At 17 inches long, it has real presence without being overbearing. I bisque fired it, then glazed it entirely by hand before a high-fire that gives the surface its strength and depth. The glaze pulls between soft white and warm stone gray, settling into the creases of each petal with a quiet, pearl-like shimmer and unglazed edges that ground it in something earthy and real. It has a coastal calm to it, but also works beautifully in minimalist, organic modern, or nature-inspired interiors.
