Buying Handmade Pottery Online: How I Ensure Safe Shipping of Fragile Ceramics

Updated: Apr 29

When people decide to buy handmade pottery online, there is often a natural hesitation around shipping. I understand that completely. I hand-build each piece from stoneware clay, glaze it, and fire it with care. Once completed, it must travel safely across the country to its new home.

Over the years, I’ve shipped my work nationwide, from sculptural ceramic bowls to one-of-a-kind vases and each order has reinforced how important thoughtful packing really is. My goal is simple: when someone chooses to buy my handmade pottery online, they should feel just as confident receiving it as they do selecting it. Shipping fragile ceramics isn’t an afterthought in my studio. It’s part of the process. Every piece is prepared with intention so it can move safely from my hands to yours, no matter the distance.

Is it safe to ship handmade pottery across the country?

Yes, handmade pottery can absolutely be shipped safely when it’s packed correctly. I’ve shipped ceramic work to homes across the United States, and the key is not luck, but a consistent, careful system. What makes it work is understanding the material. Stoneware is strong, but it still needs protection from impact and movement. So every decision I make, from how I wrap a bowl to how I size the box, is designed to eliminate shifting and absorb shock during transit.

How I Ship Pottery: My Step-By-Step Packing Method

To ensure every piece arrives safely, I follow a meticulous process that combines protection, efficiency, and care. These steps are the same method I use for every fragile ceramic order, including large bowls and sculptural pieces:

  • Wrap each piece individually with multiple layers of bubble wrap, making sure every curve, edge, and surface is fully cushioned and protected

  • Secure the wrapping with tape so nothing loosens or shifts during handling

  • Choose a box with at least a two-inch buffer on all sides for protective packing materials

  • Line the bottom of the box with cushioning before placing the wrapped piece inside

  • Fill all empty space with crumpled paper, air cushions, or packing peanuts so the piece cannot move at all

  • Gently press and adjust the packing so the item feels suspended and fully supported from every side

  • Double box every fragile item by placing the sealed inner box inside a second, larger box

    • This step is non-negotiable in my studio: I will never ship a ceramic piece in a single box. The double-boxing method is what allows my work to travel safely across the country and arrive in the same condition it left my hands.

  • Add additional cushioning between the inner and outer boxes on all sides for shock absorption

  • Seal the outer box securely with strong packing tape, reinforcing all seams and edges

  • Label clearly and perform a final shake test to confirm there is absolutely no movement inside

Stories from the Studio to Your Home

This packing and shipping process is what allows my work to travel safely across the country. Over the years, I’ve been able to see it in action as pieces arrive in homes from coast to coast. Here are a few of those journeys from my studio to theirs.

A Ceramic Coastal Bowl Heads to Texas

One of my favorite shipments was the Aruba Bowl, a flowing blue ceramic piece sent as a birthday gift to Texas. Its rippling edges and ocean-inspired glaze made it a thoughtful present that is both functional and beautiful.

The Deep Sea Wavy Bowl Brightens Tennessee

The Deep Sea Flutter Bowl found its new home in Tennessee, where it became the centerpiece of a dining table. Hearing how its vibrant colors elevated the space reminds me why I love sharing my pottery with others.

Bringing Coastal Calm: Blue Ceramic Bowl Shipped to Florida

The Blue Decorative Bowl, with hues of deep blue, soft white, and soft green, captures the feeling of calm coastal waters. Sent to Florida, it now brings a touch of seaside serenity into its new home.

A Handmade Ceramic Ruffle Bowl Finds New York

Delicate and layered like a blooming flower, a handmade ceramic ruffle bowl was sent to New York. Knowing it now sits as the centerpiece of a dining table, adding both art and function, makes every careful step of packing and shipping worthwhile.

My Wavy Blue Ceramic Coastal Bowl Arrived in Utah

My wavy blue ceramic coastal bowl found a new home all the way in Utah, where it was gifted by a thoughtful mom to celebrate her child’s new house. This hand-built ceramic bowl, with its flowing blue glaze and rippling edges, now sits as a centerpiece that brings warmth, beauty, and a touch of coastal calm to their living space. Each ceramic bowl is carefully crafted in my studio with love and attention to detail, so every piece carries not just function, but also the care and story of its creation. Knowing this bowl will be part of daily life in a cherished new home makes shipping across the country feel especially meaningful.

Ocean Inspired Wavy Ceramic Bowl Finds a Home in Mississippi

My Ocean inspired ceramic bowl recently made its way to Mississippi, where it now lives as a quiet statement piece in its new home. The soft movement of the rim and the contrast between the blue and white glaze give it a calm, collected presence that feels at ease in any space. Knowing this bowl traveled so far to become part of someone’s everyday environment is a reminder that handmade pottery has a way of fitting naturally wherever it lands, carrying its story with it.

A Sister’s Gift: Wavy Ceramic Bowl Sent to Massachusetts

One of the most meaningful shipments recently made its way to Massachusetts, where this wavy ceramic bowl was purchased by a sister as a gift for her sister. There is something especially touching about handmade pottery being chosen to mark a relationship like that. It becomes more than décor. It becomes a symbol of connection.

This piece carries a striking blend of deep teal blue and rich earthy brown, with a soft, almost crystalline transition where the two glazes meet. The organic, ruffled edges give it movement, like water meeting shoreline.
